Course Aims
- The aim of the Care of the Older Person course is to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to provide care for older people with a range of needs in a variety of settings.
- Care of the Older Person is an elective module for the Level 5 Certificate in Health Service Skills (5M3782) and Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support (5M4339).
Course Outline
- To enable the learner to develop good work practices in the provision of individualised holistic care for older people.
- To enable the learner to understand the concepts and issues related to the ageing process.
- To enable the learner to meet the full range of needs of older people in a variety of care settings.
- To enable the learner to develop the skills and competence to enhance the quality of life of older people in their care.

- The physiological and psychological process of ageing.
- Social attitudes to ageing people.
- Impact of the ageing process on the older person.
- Promotion of positive attitudes to the ageing process.
- Identify care settings and services available for older people.
- Current provision of care settings and support services for older people.
- The role of the health care assistant when working with an older person.
- Identify physical, emotional and social needs of the older person.
- Caring for Older People with specific needs.
- Effective communication with the older person.
- Promotion of advocacy, empowerment, independence, dignity and respect of the older person.
- The role of the family and carer.
- Personal effectiveness in the workplace.

Entry Requirements
- QQI Level 4, Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied
- Mature students with relevant work or life experience
- English language proficiency if appropriate.
