Course Aims

  • This module aims to introduce learners to human development and behaviour from infancy to old age.
  • It is designed for learners who intend to work in community settings or care provision where they must understand the various levels of personal development, mental age, chronological age in order to relate to people at a level appropriate to their needs.
  • Human Growth & Development may be included as an elective vocational module on a range of awards including the Certificate in Healthcare Support and Nursing Studies, Community and Social Studies.

Course Outline

  • Develop an understanding of what psychology is and the major psychological perspectives.
  • Understand the patterns of human development from conception to old age and death.
  • Putting knowledge of human growth and development in to practice.
  • Explore personal prejudices and anxieties about working with people in need of care.
  • Develop interpersonal/interactive skills for responding to the needs of others.
  • Apply skills and knowledge to typical work based problems.
  • Develop self-confidence and empathy in dealing with people.

Entry Requirements

  • QQI Level 4, Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied
  • Recognised qualifications of approved overseas institutions
  • Mature students with relevant work or life experience
  • English language proficiency if appropriate.

Course Work

  • Assignments (2) 60%: Candidates will produce case studies of clients in a care situation. This will include a description of a client’s situation and needs, suggest a response to those needs and detail the interpersonal skills and action required to meet clients’ needs.
  • Theory Based Examination 40%
    The internal assessor will devise a theory based examination.
