Course Aims

  • Learners will gain the skills and knowledge to work effectively in a care setting, promote good practice and respect for diversity in lifestyle, religion and culture in care work.
  • Care Support is a mandatory module for the Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support.
  • Note Module Requirements: Candidates will require Irish Heart Level 3 Heart Saver CPR Certificate or equivalent and must secure 6 weeks work placement.

Course Outline
Learners who successfully complete this module will understand and be able to:

  • understand the responsibilities and entitlements of a care worker
  • recognise the need for continuing development in care work, drawing on personal reflection and experience
  • promote good practice and respect for diversity in the care setting
  • understand the importance of working effectively as part of a team
  • communicate and deal with people in ways that are positive for the role of a carer.

The course is divided into four parts:

  • Part 1 Relating to the Client
  • Part 2 Reflection and Personal Development
  • Part 3 Working with Others in the Team
  • Part 4 Working in Healthcare Services

Course Work

  • Learner Record (70%): Learners will compile an ongoing record showing evidence from learner’s work in healthcare support. The record may include items such as: reflection on relationships with clients, relatives, members of the health care team, diversity issues, personal strengths and weaknesses, communication skills, receiving direction, recordkeeping and reporting, client privacy and dignity, structure of the health care teams.
  • Assignment (30%): Learners will produce a practical activity in the workplace, e.g., social event or outing. The assignment may be assessed by a workplace assessor or in consultation with a workplace supervisor

Entry Requirements

  • QQI Level 4, Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied
  • Recognised qualifications of approved overseas institutions
  • Mature students with relevant work or life experience
  • English language proficiency if appropriate.
