Course Aims and Opportunities

  • To help participants find sources of inspiration and develop their own individual taste in interior design while understanding the theory behind good design concepts.
  • Improve the look of your own home by making more informed decisions.
  • Learn about colour and textures, room layout and design, space, lighting, soft furnishings, matching and coordinating.
  • To enable participants to develop their skills and express their ideas with colour, pattern, texture and materials


  • The course will be presented by a fully qualified and experienced interior designer and will comprise 8 classroom-based sessions plus self-directed tasks to be completed each week.  The various aspects interior design are brought together in a final project where participants demonstrate their skill, ideas and personal design choices and produce a mood board.
  • Those who have 100% attendance and complete the interior design project and mood board will be awarded the ‘Introduction to Residential Interior Design – Rossan College Certificate of Completion ’.

You will study

  • Introduction to the design process, understanding simple room plans and drawing to scale, finding inspiration and introduction to mood boards.
  • Colour theory, colour psychology, the development of colour schemes, paints and wallpapers.
  • Soft furnishings and window treatments, fabrics, patterns, textures, measurements.
  • Flooring: advantages and disadvantages of different types of flooring.
  • Lighting: natural, artificial, fixtures & fittings, bulb types.
  • Overview of interior design styles of different periods; discovering your own style, mixing, matching, accessorising and finishing touches.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms:  Designs and styles, functionality and making the most of space.
  • Participants will finish the course by putting it all together and creating their own design and mood board.
