Course Aims and Opportunities

  • This course will be of interest to anyone who wants to gain practical skills in conflict management.
  • It will also interest people working in community or voluntary groups, educators, managers, worker representatives, group leaders, etc.
  • Participants will develop awareness of their own style of conflict management.
  • They will understand the role of conflict in groups and how to manage conflict in the workplace.
  • Successful candidates can go on to study other management modules and progress to further qualifications in business, management or social studies.

Course Content

  • What is conflict and understand your own personal reaction to it.
  • Critically analyse your personal style of conflict management.
  • Understand the role of conflict in groups.
  • Identify methods and strategies for managing conflict: problem solving/negotiation, smoothing approach, adversarial approach, compromising, withdrawal /avoidance.
  • Understand the role of mediation and negotiation in managing conflict.
  • Apply the skills of conflict management to real situations.
  • Demonstrate good practice in managing conflict in the work place.

Course Work

  • Case Study (50%) on Conflict Management in the Work Place.
  • Assignment (25%): Analysis of learner’s own style of conflict management, how they use it, the costs and benefits of this style.
  • Learner Record (25%): Learners will keep a reflective journal on the course, reflecting on their own feelings and attitude and personal learning path in relation to conflict.

Tuesday, 7pm – 10pm, 12 weeks

Entry Requirements
FETAC Level 5 or equivalent, experience in management, leadership, community development, voluntary work or other relevant life experiences.
