Course Aims and Career Opportunities

  • Participants on this programme will gain knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to modern business practice and the competence required to work successfully in a range of business contexts.
  • A broad range of business skills will be studied, such as communications, marketing practice, business administration, ICT applications, bookkeeping & payroll, customer service, with work experience to consolidate learning and enhance career development.
  • The importance of personal motivation, taking responsibility and initiative in applying their skills to finding solutions to a range of modern business challenges will be emphasised.
  • Learners will be asked to reflect on the reality of having to adapt to changing business environments, and take charge of their own learning and future professional development.
  • Successful candidates can pursue employment in the private, public or voluntary sectors.
  • You will have marketable job skills to apply for jobs such as Junior Business Professional, Office Assistant, Accounts Clerk, Front Office, Administration, Marketing Assistant, Customer Service, etc.
  • You may also progress to higher level qualifications such as in areas such as management, human resources, retail, computing, accounting, etc.
  • If you complete 8 Component Certificates you can achieve a Major Award in Business Studies Level 5 which will allow you to apply for a wide range of higher education degree courses in Institutes of Technology and Universities through the CAO system.

Course Timetable

The course consists of 8 QQI modules including work experience. Students are in class 3 days per week 10am – 3pm. The following is the weekly schedule:
Term 1: Certificate in Office Skills
Business Administration & ICT Applications 
Wednesday: Communications including Career Planning
Thursday: Bookkeeping – Manual and Computerised

Term 2: Certificate in Business Studies
Marketing Practice 
Wednesday: Customer Service and Word Processing
Thursday: Payroll – Manual and Computerised 
Work Experience: 4 weeks placement can be completed one day per week or as a block at the end of the course.

Entry Requirements
QQI Level 4; Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied; Recognised qualifications of approved overseas institutions; Mature students with relevant work or life experience.


Term 1: Certificate in Office Skills (4 QQI/QQI Level 5 Business Component Certificates)
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10am – 3pm, 12 weeks. Starting 23/09/14
Term 2: Certificate in Business Studies (8 QQI/QQI Level 5 Business Components)
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10am – 3pm, 14 weeks. Starting 27/01/15

One day per week: €375
One Term: €750
