Course Aims

A project is a time-bound group activity designed to produce a unique product, service or result.  ‘Project Management’, is the application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently.  It involves the processes of Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Closing.  All management is about these areas but project management focuses on goals, resources and schedule of each project. Competent project management enables organisations to align project results to business goals and ultimately be more competitive and successful.

This course aims to give participants an overview of project management and training in the features and functions of MS Project as an aid in the essential processes above for delivery of efficient and effective project results.

Course Content

Section 1:

  • Definition of project management, related terminology and concepts.
  • Create a new project plan with MS Project.
  • Work with views and reports
  • Enter project information
  • Set up and modify project calendar.

Section 2:

  • Create a task list, enter tasks, durations & deadlines
  • Create milestones, recurring tasks, logical sequences
  • Establish relationships / dependencies between tasks
  • Enter task notes & hyperlinks
  • Check plan duration and overall project plan

Section 3:

  • Create a resource list, assign costs to resources
  • Set fixed costs for tasks and define when costs accrue
  • Make changes to work schedule for a resource

Section 4:

  • Assign work resources to tasks; Control how effort-driven scheduling affects task durations

Section 5

  • Format Gantt bars with the Gantt Chart Wizard
  • Create a custom Gantt chart, Preview/Print views

Section 6

  • Save a Baseline
  • Enter actual duration of a task; update task progress as a percentage
  • Update actual work by time period and compare to plan
  • Enter total actual work done by a resource; update a resource’s actual work by time period and see variances
  • Update actual costs by time period and compare with budget
  • See total project costs, over-allocated resources and their task assignments
