Course Aims

  • This course is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to provide care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Care Skills is a mandatory module for the Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support.
  • Note: Candidates will require work placement in order to carry out some of the required skills demonstrations.

Course Outline
Part 1
Understanding Client Care:
The physical, emotional, social, psychological, and spiritual needs of clients, respect clients’ wishes and confidentiality, apply safety and security procedures, demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with clients, empathy, respect and patience, enhance client privacy and dignity, independence, positive self image and social interaction.

Part 2 Using Equipment:
Assist the client in the use of sensory equipment, mobility aids, feeding aids, washing aids, elimination aids, hoists, etc.

Part 3 Assisting Skills:
Demonstrate client care in washing/bathing/showering, positioning, approved moving and handling techniques, dressing/grooming, eating, drinking, toileting and continence promotion

Course Work

  • Skills Demonstration 60%: Candidates will be assessed on a minimum of three practical care tasks including: Preparation and Implementation, Communication, Health and Safety.
  • Assignments (2): Each assignment will focus on an aspect of client care, drawn from a period of work experience in a health care setting. Evidence should cover needs of the client, level of assistance required, course of action.

Entry Requirements

  • QQI Level 4, Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied
  • Recognised qualifications of approved overseas institutions
  • Mature students with relevant work or life experience
  • English language proficiency if appropriate.
